What’s been the problem here?

As elite athletes and coaches, you’re some of the highest profile people in society. Your stories connect communities, inspire others and drive revenue.

But performing your job in the media spotlight brings a lot of pressure. And everything can change in a heartbeat, making sport a perfect production line for heroes and villains.

Across the globe, sporting organisations have struggled to balance the dual demands of promotion and protection. That’s seen most communications departments inherit media management systems that are either restrictive (and inhibit your ability to be heard) or reckless (and roll the dice with your privacy and well-being).

We don’t believe that either system is match-fit for the modern media landscape.

What is 'informed consent'?

In order for an organisation to collect, use or disclose your private information, they must obtain 'informed consent'.

'Informed consent' is defined as the voluntary agreement of an individual after being adequately informed about the collection, use or disclosure of their personal information.

This means that individuals must be fully aware of what information is being collected, how it will be used and who it may be disclosed to.

From talking with hundreds of athletes and coaches who have had their personal contact information circulated throughout the media, we know that not many - if any - were adequately informed.

Athletes and coaches have every right not to give their consent - or to withdraw it.

How does Blinder work?

So, you just pick a time and then pick up your phone. We even send you a text reminder.

The interview can be recorded for the safeguarding of all parties. And no one needs an app.

Where did Blinder come from?

High-performance sport in New Zealand.

Caley Wilson, who founded Blinder, used to be the media manager of New Zealand Rugby League and worked alongside athletes like Sonny Bill Williams, Benji Marshall and Shaun Johnson, as well as female stars like Maria Tutaia.

Caley recognised that sporting organisations were struggling to provide great media access to athletes, while also taking care of their privacy, well-being and performance.

Me and my playing group are being treated recklessly. What can we do to drive change?

The sporting organisation you represent needs your ‘informed consent’ to distribute your personal contact information. You have every right to say ‘No’ to giving that consent.

We actually recommend saying “Yeah, Nah” to your sporting organisation:

“Yeah, I’m right up for doing media interviews to support the team but Nah, you don’t have my 'informed consent' to distribute my personal contact information.”
